Jules Verne's book anticipated some of
the features of modern submarines and drew on an encyclopedic
knowledge of the oceans. I can thoroughly recommend this book.
Captain Nemo is an enigmatic character
who has turned his back on the world in order to explore the
depths of the ocean. His very name means "nobody" and the
exploration of his enigma exercises the thoughts of Professor
Arronax as much as the natural phenomena which he describes in
graphic detail.
Incidentally 20,000 French leagues is about 40,000 nautical miles. A lot in other words.
