Ken Follett - Never

The story about the Americans shooting down a Chinese balloon was in the news while I was reading this terrifying book about an escalating conflict between America and China.

Ken Follett had the advice of people involved in the political world while writing this book and every part of it is credible.

What makes it more readable is the back story of the characters which means that they are more human and three-dimensional.

Nevertheless this book ought to give you nightmares as you listen to the current news and the unfolding conflict between the old and new superpowers.

Ken Follett seems to think the CIA is quite benevolent and that is not a view shared by anybody in Chile or anywhere else for that matter!

However this is an eminently well-written and readable book and I enjoyed reading it, despite the nightmares!

National Shop Stewards Network

I attended the NSSN meeting on 6th February as an observer.

There were reports from all the strikes which are taking place. NSSN is able to offer support from one union to another.

The overwhelming message of the meeting was for a general strike on 15th March, budget day. Why?

A general strike will ramp up the pressure on the government. They have gone from saying "no negotiations" to telling the media dishonestly that they are negotiating. The next step would be to actually negotiate. This government is wracked with scandal and aware of its weakness.

Secondly it reminds trade union activists that "we are many they are few." To quote Bob Crow, "It's a battle of the 99 percent against the 1 percent. I like those odds."

Today BP announced record profits of £23 billion, double last year's. The government pretends that there is no money to pay the public sector workers or pensioners. It is a false argument. There is plenty of money to line the pockets of shareholders.

Delilah

According to Murdoch's Sky News, "Tom Jones' iconic Delilah song has been banned from Wales national stadium by rugby chiefs"
Tom Jones is famous for a number of other songs so "iconic" is hyperbole.
It is a powerful song but the lyrics never did make any sense.
In the context of knife crime and violence against women, the lyrics are appalling.
In the first verse, the protagonist sees that someone he thought of as his property has moved on.
"I felt the knife in my hand" - he was looking at ten years in prison for that alone.
"If I can't have her, nobody will". is the sole justification. It won't stand up in court.
Delilah had had enough of him and you can see why. Alternately she was only "his" in his mind.
And in the last verse, he is about to be arrested and carted off to prison and the gallows.
Tom Jones did not advocate knife crime or violence against women.
The lyrics are as follows, what do you think?
I saw the light on the night that I passed by her windowI saw the flickering shadows of love on her blindShe was my womanAs she deceived me, I watched and went out of my mind
My, my, my, DelilahWhy, why, why, DelilahI could see, that girl was no good for meBut I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waitingI crossed the street to her house and she opened the doorShe stood there laughingI felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, DelilahWhy, why, why, DelilahSo before they come to break down the doorForgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore
